In this sense, the game's replayability is almost incalculable, confined only by the creativity of its player base. While the developer's campaign is great, many of the levels online are just as good, if not better. Picking user created content is easy and, much like Super Mario Maker, feels genuinely worth playing. This is excellent for those looking to expand the Prodeus experience. Savvy players can create some truly unique maps with the depth of tools, and these can be shared online for others. One of the most robust and exciting aspects of Prodeus is its user-generated content. Players looking for variety can turn their attention to the level editor and community maps. The speed and controlled chaos of the combat stops the player from dawdling long enough to contemplate the environments, so it's largely an issue in hindsight. While outdoor levels have a stronger identity, many of the interior locales began to blend together and feel same-y. In a game all about moving from kill to kill, giving the player the ability to utilize more of their weapons on the fly without having to choose where to allocate ammunition would make the firefights even more powerful. Still, it does limit the player's possibilities. It makes sense, as juggling individual ammo types for each gun would become a lot to manage. For instance, using the chain gun also depletes the pistol's ammo, as they both draw from the same supply. The trouble lies in how weapons are grouped together by ammo type. As such, its more unique energy weapons are certainly the star of the show, even if the impact of the shotgun is hard to pass up. Many of the core weapons in Prodeus feel a tad too familiar. The one place where the gunplay falters somewhat is in the construction of its arsenal. The game showers the player in an awe-inspiring symphony of blood, lead and hardcore music. In the midst of the action, any narrative justification would be secondary to the carnage anyway. There isn't much in the way of story, but that doesn't particularly matter. Each firefight sends the player's heart rate straight to the moon, as all manner of hellspawn descends upon them. Gunplay is the central strength of Prodeus and why it remains consistently engaging. The team at Bounding Box has experience with first-person shooters, and that comes through clearly when playing Prodeus. The smooth gunplay feels straight out of a current-gen title, though, and this combination feels great. With health packs and weapons strewn around nonlinear levels, it's easy to feel the traditional design that informs Prodeus. Much like classic DOOMor Wolfenstein, the gameplay is simple and bloody. While the early access build only has a fraction of the full campaign, what's here is incredibly compelling. When the player first boots up Prodeus, the campaign is a great place to begin.
